Recommendations?

I just logged into my Amazon account and had a new recommendation for a book called "A Scattered Life" by breakout author Karen McQuestion. If you're a Kindle user, it's only $2.99.

Here's a link to the Amazon page.

Feel free to comment on this book or to add your own recommendations!

For next Tuesday, read the first half of "The Scent of Rain & Lightning." If you haven't had a chance to look for it, and you're in the Bridgeport area, it is NOT available at our Borders or Target store - so you may have to order online.

Happy New Year!

New Book!

First off, next week, December 28, we will NOT have a meeting. Happy Holidays :)

New book choice: "The Scent of Rain & Lightning" by Nancy Pickard is only 211 pages long. So we'll read half for the first meeting of the year (January 4), and half for the second meeting. Again, Tuesdays, 6pm @Panera.

We'll need a third book lined up since this next one is so short... so start checking out synopses & reviews!

See you next year!

The Next Book...

Hi everyone!
CDillon & Becky came to the last meeting. All three of us have already finished reading "The Help," so we discussed the questions from the publisher and our satisfaction (or lack thereof) with the ending.

We also began to debate over the next selection. CDillon came prepared with a number of synopses printed off from LitLovers.com. Paolo Coehlo's "The Alchemist" and Markus Zusak's "The Book Thief" are two that we are interested in reading. Does anyone have any additional suggestions before we make a final decision? Post it as a comment below :)

Happy Reading! Hope to see everyone next Tuesday - I have the VIP room reserved for us at Panera.

Finally!

OK, I've been fighting with my blogger account since last Tuesday's meeting and finally had to reset my password in order to login. So I apologize for not posting anything new!

CDillon & I discussed the mother - daughter relationships in the book, as well as the way the times influence the character development in the book. We had a great time :)

We should come up with some sort of snow policy since it is winter! I know there was a bit of confusion last week since there was a snow day at school. Thoughts? Often the roads are not good in the morning, but 12 hours later, they would be fine for the book club meeting. And then there are times when there IS school, but by 6pm the roads are icky. So it's hard to come up with any sort of "policy" - maybe we should just create a phone book/phone tree for the club, that way we can call the meetings off if we need to due to weather, and we'll have each others' numbers to call with any questions. Next meeting...

Tomorrow is the next meeting. I already know that the VIP room is reserved, so we'll probably end up in the dining room somewhere. I have the VIP room reserved for us next week, Dec. 21.

Hope to see you all tomorrow!
-Nikki

How to Comment...

In response to a few questions about how to post, here are the instructions:

  • Type your comment.
  • Underneath, there is a drop down menu that says "Comment as." Click on the menu and choose an account to comment from. (If you already have a Yahoo! email account, click on Google account).

November 30 Meeting

Thanks to Becky & Kym for coming to the first meeting!

We've decided to read about 100 pages per week, which means our schedule looks like this:

December 7: Read chapters 2 - 8
December 14: Read chapters 9 - 16
December 21: Read chapters 17 - 24
December 28: Read chapters 25 - End

Here is a question from the publisher to ponder as you read: How much of a person's character would you say is shaped by the times in which they live?

Happy Reading!

Welcome!

Hello! Welcome to the Club! I'm Nikki, and I'm apparently going to be the website coordinator! lol. Actually, I'm hoping that by the first of the year we can have a "real" website up and running - for now, we'll have to make do with the blog.

So why start a Book Club? Quite frankly, because I miss those intellectual conversations you get to have about books and authors in a college classroom! I LOVE to read and it's so much more exciting and meaningful to discuss what I'm reading with someone else. The problem that I've discovered is that, when I recommend a book to a friend, it means that I've already read it - and vice versa. We never get to discuss AS we read, rather, one of us tries not to "give away" the important parts as the other talks about the book. I think it's time to start sharing in the whole experience, from choosing a book to reading to discussing! It's time!

What types of books will we read? Everything. Well, that's the plan for now anyways. We can choose a different genre each month. If we find a genre we don't particularly care for, there's no rule that says we have to choose from it, we'll just find something else. Fiction, non-fiction, adolescent lit, the classics, sci-fi, self help/inspiration, new releases, NY Times Bestsellers, Oprah's Book Club... we can rotate!

When will we meet? Well, that depends upon where you live. If you don't live in our area, then you can "meet" with us anytime by posting on the blog. Physical meetings will take place on Tuesday evenings @6pm. If you can't make it to a "real" meeting, be sure to catch up on the blog!

Where will we meet? That could depend as well. Obviously some of you will meet on the Internet. Others will meet @Panera Bread... a nice central location. If you are leading the discussion for a week and crave the role of hostess, invite us over to your house :) Mostly, I figure we'll just meet at Panera, that way no one has to cook or clean or fret - we can relax and focus on the book.

A few announcements, comments, and things to ponder...

  • Meetings will be on Tuesdays @6pm @Panera Bread in Bridgeport.
  • First Meeting: Tuesday, November 30 (Tuesday AFTER Thanksgiving)
  • First book: "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett (it's getting amazing reviews!)
  • Discussion leader: me, at least for the first meeting
  • Assignment: Read chapter one

Things to ponder:

  • We need a name. Suggestions?
  • How do we want to choose a discussion leader? Rotation? Whoever chooses the book gets to lead throughout the book? Other ideas...
  • How long should we spend on each book? One month? Varying times, depending on the length of the book?
  • Keep an eye out for our next book... be ready to make suggestions!

This is not a "closed" book club. If you have a friend that reads along with you, then please invite him/her to attend our meetings (in person or online!)

If you have any questions, shoot me an email: n_foley@yahoo.com

Happy Reading!
