So why start a Book Club? Quite frankly, because I miss those intellectual conversations you get to have about books and authors in a college classroom! I LOVE to read and it's so much more exciting and meaningful to discuss what I'm reading with someone else. The problem that I've discovered is that, when I recommend a book to a friend, it means that I've already read it - and vice versa. We never get to discuss AS we read, rather, one of us tries not to "give away" the important parts as the other talks about the book. I think it's time to start sharing in the whole experience, from choosing a book to reading to discussing! It's time!
What types of books will we read? Everything. Well, that's the plan for now anyways. We can choose a different genre each month. If we find a genre we don't particularly care for, there's no rule that says we have to choose from it, we'll just find something else. Fiction, non-fiction, adolescent lit, the classics, sci-fi, self help/inspiration, new releases, NY Times Bestsellers, Oprah's Book Club... we can rotate!
When will we meet? Well, that depends upon where you live. If you don't live in our area, then you can "meet" with us anytime by posting on the blog. Physical meetings will take place on Tuesday evenings @6pm. If you can't make it to a "real" meeting, be sure to catch up on the blog!
Where will we meet? That could depend as well. Obviously some of you will meet on the Internet. Others will meet @Panera Bread... a nice central location. If you are leading the discussion for a week and crave the role of hostess, invite us over to your house :) Mostly, I figure we'll just meet at Panera, that way no one has to cook or clean or fret - we can relax and focus on the book.
A few announcements, comments, and things to ponder...
- Meetings will be on Tuesdays @6pm @Panera Bread in Bridgeport.
- First Meeting: Tuesday, November 30 (Tuesday AFTER Thanksgiving)
- First book: "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett (it's getting amazing reviews!)
- Discussion leader: me, at least for the first meeting
- Assignment: Read chapter one
Things to ponder:
- We need a name. Suggestions?
- How do we want to choose a discussion leader? Rotation? Whoever chooses the book gets to lead throughout the book? Other ideas...
- How long should we spend on each book? One month? Varying times, depending on the length of the book?
- Keep an eye out for our next book... be ready to make suggestions!
This is not a "closed" book club. If you have a friend that reads along with you, then please invite him/her to attend our meetings (in person or online!)

Happy Reading!
